What would YOU do?
Ok, here`s the thing...
What would you do if Jimi Hendrix came up to you, a budding guitarist, and played something he just wrote for you?
YOU!
My most loved artist is one Jean "Moebuis" Giraud, a greatly respected artist in France and most of this planet. He`s drawn comic books that have inspired and moved many generations of people for many many years. His paintings, prints, concept work for movies, comic books and sketches have been and continue to be admired by the great and the good.
To cut a long, and basically self indulgent story short...
He drew me this page. (!!!!)
It hangs in honour over my modest drawing desk.
I`d been invited to contribute to Moebius Comics in 1996, a publication printing never before seen work by the master and some "jam" work by some of his loyal fellow creators (fans). I had the great pleasure of being in the position of knowing him personally and so I phoned him to tell him what I was doing. He proceeded to say "wouldn`t it be fun if I did one of your pages...not telling anyone?!" Erm...ok i said, but it`ll be obvious that you did it. (not wanting to stop his train of thought)..."oh" he continued,"but it`ll be fun!"
So I let it pass, thinking/knowing it would never happen.
A few weeks later I was in Paris. I phone him to say "I`m in Paris", hoping he`ll say "we should meet up". He did!
While supping brandy in a road-side bar he presented me with this page.
To this day I`m not sure, not really positive that it happened...but still I have hard and fast physical evidence that it did in the form of the page.
(update)
Since the tragic loss of Jean I've decided to show here the entire Arzak strip that we did together. Jean had totally changed the direction of the story with his page, which I then had to pick up from. I had drawn the first two and a half pages before Jean gave me his page. I've included my copies of his roughs below, showing how the story changed. Here's the result...
